5 Tips for Using Laminates in High-End Interior Design

26 Jan 2025 · Kyzo

Laminates have shed their budget reputation. With the right selection, application technique, and detailing, they can achieve results that rival lacquer and veneer.

1. Choose Texture Strategically

Matte and super-matte finishes photograph beautifully and feel premium to the touch. Glossy finishes work well in small doses — an island waterfall edge, a feature cabinet.

2. Match Edge Bands Precisely

Visible mismatched edge bands kill an otherwise premium look. Invest in acrylic or precisely colour-matched PVC edge bands, and use PUR hot melt for a hairline joint.

3. Use Large Format Sheets

Standard laminate sheets are 8×4 feet. For long kitchen runs, minimise visible joins by planning cuts carefully and using reverse-matched sheets where available.

4. Consider 3D & Embossed Laminates

Brands like Merino, Greenlam, and Stylam offer embossed and 3D texture laminates that add tactile depth — perfect for feature walls and statement cabinet fronts.

5. Combine with Other Materials

The most sophisticated interiors mix laminates with veneer inserts, metal strips, or glass panels. Let the laminate be the supporting material while a natural element takes centre stage.
